Charles,

These sound like good ideas. Do you mean you as in me :) Unfortunately, 
I don't have time to research every Linux and BSD platform to add 
automatic support for this in the install procedure. Its usually a job 
left to platform package maintainers. My hope is that the software will 
be picked up by a few distributions and then users won't have to compile 
from source. At that point, things should just just work. Until then, 
the software will need to be compiled and installed by an end user.

Do you have some examples for the procedures you suggest? No doubt, your 
experience with the platform you use could be very helpful to others :)
