I am not sure if this is true. I am currently investigating on this
issue because Shrew works on my laptop with ethernet but not with WLAN. I
don't like to disable some native os functions just because of a
program.

This is correct. The adapter will be activated in the moment you
establish the connection. No need to enable it manually.
