Nope, rp_filter didn't help.  They're set to whatever was the default
(net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter=1) on my Oneiric system, and I
haven't modified sysctls on this machine prior when the connection was
working under shrew 2.1.5; to make sure, I've reverted to shrew 2.1.5
(Natty packages) again and was able to connect successfully to the
OpenBSD gateway with it.

I'm also able to compare with using shrew 2.1.7 on Windows 7, and
unlike the Linux version it was able to connect.
