That's disappointing that the 2.1.7 package doesn't work, but the 
workaround instructions will be really useful for folks.  Many thanks!

Are you any good at builds? Do you want to take a try at building 2.1.7 
manually on 11.10 to see if it's a problem with the package or a 
fundamental problem with the 2.1.7 code?
