[vpn-help] split dns does not appear to be working

Depends where you mean....

under name resolution > DNS, once you choose the "enable dns" check box and 
then enter the remote dns server, the dns suffix box is greyed out, as is the 
"obtain automatically" which is checked just above the dns suffix field.

Under the Split DNS page, the remote AD domain of the variety 
domainname.local IS specified.
