Hi,
It should work when not using ModeConfig (agressive set on Netgear) but must be carefull to has different subnets (your local IP on PC and your remote subnet).

Hi Michal
What bug are you talking ?
Because the bug is only with ModeConfig On and Xauth Off
It is possible to use Netgear product with Shrew VPN when ModeConfig OFF and Xauth OFF.

Hi,
No it won't work due to bug in all NetGear products (bug in VPN - wrong messages are sent).
Only ModeConfig+XAUTH works with Shrew.
If you have NetScreen Remote (NetGear OEM VPN client) it will work with FVG318.

Mike, thank you for taking the time to reply. I assume the Netgear FVG318 is the cheap brother of the FVS318. The FVG318 does neither support mode config nor xauth. The admin settings of the FVG318 don't show these options.
Is it possible to use the shrew client with a VPN gateway that doesn't have mode config and xauth?

Did you ever get a reply?
You MUST use mode config with the shrew client and FVS318. I just set one up this past week.
Make sure that the mode config IP address that's assigned is not the same subnet as the VPN router's internal LAN address.
For example, if you use 192.168.1.1 as the VPN LAN gateway address, then make sure your assigned IP addresses by mode-config are something like 192.168.2.x
You must also use XAUTH. Setting it up was very straightforward. Sorry I can't recall the steps at the moment but I did read about it in the howto section of the the shrew.net website.
Hope this helps!
Mike

Thank you very much for providing this VPN client!
I have a Netgear FVG318. I hope I have done my homework .. I searched the list
archive, there was only one unanswered email about this device.
Has some successfully connected to this Netgear gateway? The HowToNetgear
article http://www.shrew.net/support/wiki/HowtoNetgear is for other Netgear VPN
Gateways that support Mode Config. The FVG318 does not have a Mode Config
option.
Trying to connect to this gateway the device is logging as final error:
Invalid exchange type 6
Google-researching it seems that this message has to do with Mode Config. I
found this email from 2006, mentioning how to make sure not to use any Mode
Config features with the Shrew Client:
http://lists.shrew.net/pipermail/vpn-help/2006-October/000610.html
I tried disabling all these, but am still getting the same error message on the
gateway.
Any advice on how (and if it is possible at all) to connect to the FVG318 would
be appreciated!
Thanks,
Tilman
