[vpn-help] VPN Connection Problems

Experts:

I am using Shrew client 2.2.0 on multiple laptops including XP SP3, WIN 7 SP1, and Server 2003 (Standard Edition) SP2.  My gateway is a Netgear FVS 338 running the latest firmware, 3.0.7-24.  This runs through a transparent DSL Bridge.  My advertised speeds at home are 12Mbps up and 5 Mbps down.  I am remotely trying to connect through Verzion 3G MiFi cards.


I know 2003 was not listed as compatible with the Shrewsoft download, but i tried it since XP was supported.  It installed fine and successfully connects.  The server is an application server running a SQL database.

Without saying what I do, I run a deployable network that responds to some of the worst conditions you can imagine.  My team occasionally runs into the challenge of setting up in multiple sites.  Sometimes I am able to connect these sites with my Moto Point-to-Point, but occasionally I do not have line of sight.  I am testing if I can connect the client stations to the application server via remote VPN.  All stations including server are VPN to an appliance located in a fixed location...for testing purposes, my house.

I have been having problems with the multiple stations kicking off the the stations that connected prior.  I juggle the connection for a while, and soon the VPN Gateway doesn't respond to anyone.  Several hardware reboots later things start connecting again with the same problem.  I really noticed this after I connected the server for the first time.  Prior to that I was able to RDP on station from the other station through the VPN Connection, so I know they can reach each other.

I set up the Shrew exactly the way shown on the Shrew set-up page for netgear.  


Maybe a question for further down the road, but can I set this up a different way than shown on the Shrew set-up page?  It ha me using 3DES, which I recall uses a ton of processor resourses.  I have a little different setup than most homeowners.  I also run a win 2008 R2 Enterprise Server at home, mostly just for practice and familiarization.  If anyone has suggestions for a better way to set up, I am all ears.  I am still a beginner in the IT world, but I do have A+, NET+, SEC+, MCITP (system admin), and CCNA.
