[vpn-help] W 8.1: VPN does not work with W8 Apps

I am using W8.1 32-bit. Using remote desktop and IE 11 in modern UI it is not possible to connect to nodes in local network via VPN tunnel. Using same applications in desktop mode are connecting and communicating well.

It seems like 32- and 64-bit systems behaving similar. Now remaining question seems to be whether problem is related to W8.1 or VPN client implementation?

FWIW I’m running 64-bit 8.1 with the 64-bit 2.2.2 Shrew client, and while testing the “modern” remote desktop app, I could not access remote hosts over the VPN tunnel. That was the first time I’ve ever tested this though, as I have no need to run any modern apps across it.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying; there is a bit of a language barrier. I run 64-bit Windows 8. As to what version of the Shrew Soft VPN client I'm running (64-bit or 32-bit), I don't know. When I get home from work tonight, I'll check. But since it is likely the same version I installed on other systems (systems that were 32-bit), I am probably running the 32-bit client.

I do like the modern UI of W8.1-same user interface on desktop, tablet and smartphone.

On laptops typically a 64-bit W8.1 is installed. Shrew VPN client is available as 32- and 64-bit version. Even 64-bit VPN is working with W8.1 modern UI it must not be necessarily the case with 32-bit. What version have you installed?

Bernd

I use the Shrew Soft VPN client on my laptop at home to connect to the network at the organization I currently work for and run Windows 8 apps through it without the least little bit of problem.

I will admit though that I hate the Windows 8 "Metro" user interface and the Windows 8.1 update of Metro isn't any better as far as I'm concerned. So what I did was to (for all practical purposes) replace the UI with another one. If you are having issues with the Metro interface, try www.classicshell.net. You can turn your user interface into an interface that is the same as that which came on Windows XP.

Hi Alexis,

I had a look to the links posted. These threads are more than one year old and related to W 8.0. The descritpion of mal function is similar to my problems.

The link to KB article of Microsoft is just available in awful German for me. Do you know whether these issues are solved with W 8.1?

Bernd
